Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py Cuvée Javernières – 2020

Javernières is a small vineyard at the foot of the famous Cote de Py in Morgon. The soil here is a mix of clay and iron and the vines have an average age of 40 years. The exposure of the vineyard is southeast and the vines have been worked organically since 2005.

With aromas of ripe blackberries and violets, it has lovely weight of fruit, elegance and finesse and a long finish. Very classy!

“The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with aromas of wild berries, spices, rose petals, loamy soil and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with impressive reserves of ripe tannin and sapid fruit, it’s seamless and lively, concluding with a long, resonant finish. As ever, this is built to age, and it will reward patience, even if its youthful charms are considerable.

This 13-hectare domaine produces some of the longest-lived and most serious wines in the Beaujolais. Old vines, farmed organically and harvested late, produce grapes that see traditional winemaking with whole clusters, long macerations and a submerged cap. The result is a range of inky, saturated reds with plenty of character and structure, and the top cuvées will have no trouble evolving for two decades. Anyone looking to experience the glories of aged Beaujolais shouldn’t hesitate to tuck a couple of cases away in the cellar, as a 2010 Impénitents, an overlooked vintage, amply proved on this most recent visit.” 94+/100pts The Wine Advocate

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py – 2020

From 70 year old vines grown on schist and volcanic soils on the east side of the Cote du Py, this amazingly rich and concentrated Morgon has beautiful chocolate raspberry fruit and spice flavours, with velvet smooth tannins. It has 14.5% alcohol which is high for the Beaujolais region and a real sign of our climate-warmed times, but retains perfect freshness and balance.

“Deep and complete, the Desvignes’s 2020 Morgon Côte du Py offers up aromas of sweet berries, spices, plums and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with velvety tannins, lively acids and a saline finish, this is a supremely dependable classic that evokes a somewhat fresher version of the very attractive 2018.

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py Cuvée Javernières Les Impenitents – 2019

This wonderful, dense and concentrated “super-Beaujolais” comes from 3 parcels of 106 year old vines in Javernières. “The 2019 Morgon Côte du Py Les Impénitents is showing brilliantly, but that won’t surprise followers of this cuvée that’s routinely among the Beaujolais’ finest and most age-worthy wines. Offering up a deep-pitched bouquet of blackberries, cassis and raspberries complemented by hints of smoked meats and peonies, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with phenomenal concentration, lively acids and an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery tannin, concluding with a long and penetrating finish. As I wrote last year, this 13-hectare domaine produces some of the longest-lived and most serious wines in the Beaujolais. Old vines, cultivated soils, a late harvest and traditional winemaking with whole clusters, long macerations and a submerged cap are the rudiments of the approach. These are inky, saturated reds with plenty of character and structure, and the top cuvées will have no trouble evolving for two decades. Anyone looking to experience the glories of aged Beaujolais shouldn’t hesitate to tuck a couple of cases away in the cellar.” 95/100pts The Wine Advocate

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py – 2019

This Morgon comes from 65 year old vines grown in the schistous/volcanic-soiled Cote du Puy subzone. It is extremely pure and intense with lovely depth and density of vibrant raspberry and red berry fruits. It is very young and needs a little time to open up but the fruit is delicious!

“The 2019 Morgon Côte du Py reveals aromas of blackberries, cherries, smoked meats and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it’s charming and enveloping, with a generous core of succulent fruit that’s framed by powdery tannins. Less tightly wound than the Javernières, this will drink well out of the gate but also offer considerable longevity. Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py 150cl Cuvée Javernières – 2019

“Unfurling in the glass with a youthfully reserved nose of raspberries, wild plums, spices, white tea and rose petals, the 2019 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with real concentration, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins. Still quite tightly wound after its recent bottling—a matter of weeks before I tasted it—this will, as ever, merit several years in the cellar. At maturity, I suspect the 2019 will be more dynamic than the 2018 rendition, and it will delight admirers of serious cru Beaujolais.
