From 70 year old vines grown on schist and volcanic soils on the east side of the Cote du Py, this amazingly rich and concentrated Morgon has beautiful chocolate raspberry fruit and spice flavours, with velvet smooth tannins. It has 14.5% alcohol which is high for the Beaujolais region and a real sign of our climate-warmed times, but retains perfect freshness and balance.
“Deep and complete, the Desvignes’s 2020 Morgon Côte du Py offers up aromas of sweet berries, spices, plums and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with velvety tannins, lively acids and a saline finish, this is a supremely dependable classic that evokes a somewhat fresher version of the very attractive 2018.
This 13-hectare domaine produces some of the longest-lived and most serious wines in the Beaujolais. Old vines, farmed organically and harvested late, produce grapes that see traditional winemaking with whole clusters, long macerations and a submerged cap. The result is a range of inky, saturated reds with plenty of character and structure, and the top cuvées will have no trouble evolving for two decades. Anyone looking to experience the glories of aged Beaujolais shouldn’t hesitate to tuck a couple of cases away in the cellar, as a 2010 Impénitents, an overlooked vintage, amply proved on this most recent visit.”
