Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py Cuvée Javernières Aux Pierres – 2022

From 90 year old vines planted on a mix of clay, slate and volcanic soils in a tiny “lieu-dit” of Morgon Javernières, this superb Beaujolais is packed with deep, dense dark cherry fruit flavours. Vinified using 50% whole bunches and matured for 10 months in large concrete eggs, it has silky smooth tannins and a refreshing bite of salty acidity to give freshness and balance. 14.5% alcohol (which for a Beaujolais is quite remarkable!) A serious wine with long ageing potential.

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py Cuvée Javernières Les Impenitents – 2022

Please note – this is Desvignes’ top cuvée and only produced in tiny quantities. The maximum order quantity is 3 bottles per customer.

This wonderful, dense and concentrated “super-Beaujolais” comes from a tiny (0.86hectares) parcel of 109 year old Gamay vines grown on iron and clay soils in Javernières. Despite the concentration of the dark cherry fruit, it has great purity and finesse and “only” (for this hot vintage) 13.5% alcohol. This is an exceptional Beaujolais of the very highest quality which will develop in bottle over at least 15 years.

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py Cuvée Javernières Aux Pierres – 2021

This wine was new to the Desvignes range in the 2020 vintage. It comes from a tiny 0.57 hectare plot of 90 year old vines grown on the schistous, volcanic soils of Morgon’s Clos du Puy vineyard.

The vineyard has been cultivated organically since 2005. The grapes were picked by hand, then vinified in the traditional Beaujolais method of leaving the whole grapes to ferment naturally for 10 days. The resulting wine was then left in concrete eggs to mature for 10 months before bottling.

Rich and deep with dark cherry fruit flavours, this has a surprisingly high level of fruit density and structure for the cool 2021 vintage. It also has plenty of fresh, slightly salty acidity to give impeccable balance.

“From an east-facing parcel of 90-year-old vines, 2021 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières Aux Pierres is also superb, delivering aromas of blackberries, plums, exotic spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it’s seamless and enveloping, with a layered core of fruit that largely conceals its ripe structuring tannins. This bottling, which joined the range last year, is rapidly establishing itself as one of the high points of the portfolio.” 94/100pts Wine Advocate

“Louis-Benoît Desvignes reported yields averaging 23 hectoliters per hectare in the 2021 vintage, mainly due to losses from frost, which made for uneven ripeness down the line. The domaine accordingly destemmed more than usual, opting for macerations lasting 12–13 days. The results remind Louis-Benoît increasingly of the 2016 vintage, a very successful year in a more classical register at this address. As I’ve written before, this 13-hectare domaine produces some of the longest lived and most serious wines in the Beaujolais. Old vines, farmed organically and harvested late, produce grapes that see traditional winemaking with a submerged cap. The result is a range of inky, saturated reds with plenty of character and structure, and the top cuvées generally have no trouble evolving for two decades.” William Kelley, Wine Advocate

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py Cuvée Javernières – 2021

Javernières is a small vineyard at the foot of the famous Cote de Puy in Morgon. The soil here is a mix of clay and iron and the vines have an average age of 40 years. The exposure of the vineyard is southeast and the vines have been worked organically since 2005.

With aromas of ripe blackberries and violets, it has lovely weight of fruit, crunchy acidity and a long, mineral finish. Very classy!

“There’s no Impenitents bottling this year, so everything went into the 2021 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières, a brilliant effort in this challenging vintage. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, ripe plums, wild berries, vine smoke and petals, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with terrific mid-palate volume, ripe tannins, tangy acids and a long, penetrating finish.” 94/100 pts Wine Advocate

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py – 2021

From 70 year old vines grown on schist and volcanic soils on the east side of the Cote du Py, this deliciously dense and concentrated Morgon has dark raspberry fruit and spice flavours, with velvet smooth tannins and crunchy fresh acidity.

“Opening in the glass with notes of cherries, smoky berries, sweet soil tones and burning embers, the 2021 Morgon Côte du Py is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with good concentration, powdery tannins and a penetrating, saline finish. Despite the challenges of the vintage, the Desvignes family has produced a very classy wine.” 92/100pts Wine Advocate

Desvignes Morgon Corcelette – 2021

Grown on south-facing, 50 year old vines grown on the pink granite soils of the Corcelette vineyard, this is always the most easily approachable and charmingly fruity of the Desvignes stable of wines. Packed with raspberry and redcurrant fruit flavours, this is crunchy, refreshing and very difficult to put down!

“Bright and charming, the 2021 Morgon Corcelette bursts with aromas of plums, raspberries, rose petals, vine smoke and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with bright acids and melting tannins, it’s another of the more immediate, giving wines in the range.” 92/100pts Wine Advocate

Desvignes Morgon Corcelette – 2022

Grown on south-facing, 50 year old vines grown on the pink granite soils of the tiny Corcelette vineyard, this is always the most easily approachable and charmingly fruity of the Desvignes stable of wines. The fairly high altitude of this vineyard (420mts) has given balance and freshness to the ripe and savoury raspberry and redcurrant fruit flavours from this warm vintage. Drinking very nicely already, this is a beautiful example of Beaujolais’ great Morgon Cru at a very fair price!

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py Cuvée Javernières – 2019

“Unfurling in the glass with a youthfully reserved nose of raspberries, wild plums, spices, white tea and rose petals, the 2019 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with real concentration, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins. Still quite tightly wound after its recent bottling—a matter of weeks before I tasted it—this will, as ever, merit several years in the cellar. At maturity, I suspect the 2019 will be more dynamic than the 2018 rendition, and it will delight admirers of serious cru Beaujolais. As I wrote last year, this 13-hectare domaine produces some of the longest-lived and most serious wines in the Beaujolais. Old vines, cultivated soils, a late harvest and traditional winemaking with whole clusters, long macerations and a submerged cap are the rudiments of the approach. These are inky, saturated reds with plenty of character and structure, and the top cuvées will have no trouble evolving for two decades. Anyone looking to experience the glories of aged Beaujolais shouldn’t hesitate to tuck a couple of cases away in the cellar.” 94+/100pts The Wine Advocate

Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py Cuvée Javernières Les Impenitents – 2020

Please note – this is Desvignes’ top cuvée and only produced in tiny quantities. The maximum order quantity is 6 bottles per customer.

This wonderful, dense and concentrated “super-Beaujolais” comes from 3 parcels of 106 year old vines in Javernières.

“The Desvignes portfolio attains its crescendo with the 2020 Morgon Côte du Py Les Impénitents. Offering up aromas of wild berries, violets, orange rind, Egyptian musk, warm spices and loamy soil, it’s medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, its broad and velvety attack segueing into a deep and layered mid-palate that’s framed by rich, powdery tannins and lively acids. Multidimensional, penetrating and perfumed, it’s a profound Morgon that numbers among the wines of the vintage. But what’s new?

This 13-hectare domaine produces some of the longest-lived and most serious wines in the Beaujolais. Old vines, farmed organically and harvested late, produce grapes that see traditional winemaking with whole clusters, long macerations and a submerged cap. The result is a range of inky, saturated reds with plenty of character and structure, and the top cuvées will have no trouble evolving for two decades. Anyone looking to experience the glories of aged Beaujolais shouldn’t hesitate to tuck a couple of cases away in the cellar, as a 2010 Impénitents, an overlooked vintage, amply proved on this most recent visit.”
