Bindi Kostas Rind Chardonnay Macedon Ranges, Victoria – 2019

Bindi is widely acknowledged as being one of Australia’s best small producers. It is situated at around 500m altitude in the cool climate Macedon Ranges, about an hour’s drive north of Melbourne. The winery is truly “boutique”, even by Burgundian standards, with only 7 hectares of vines, of which 5 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir and 2 hectares with Chardonnay. Total production is never higher than 3,000 cases per vintage. This fresh, intense, mineral Chardonnay comes from a small plot (1.5 hectares) of 32 year old vines planted on volcanic soils. It has gentle aromas and flavours of orange blossom, nectarine stone, spice and cashew nuts with vibrant, tight, very fine acidity and long length. Around 750 cases were produced. Just starting to drink now, this will open up and gain in complexity over the next 5 years and then drink beautifully until 2035. Serve with pan-fried white fish fillets, calamari, or oysters. The 2019 vintage has not yet been rated but the 2017 vintage was awarded 95pts by Australian wine guru James Halliday in his 2020 Wine Companion

Bindi Original Vineyard Pinot Noir Macedon Ranges, Victoria – 2019

This delicious special release Pinot Noir from Bindi is only available in very small volumes.

A small proportion of whole bunches (5%) were included in the vats with the majority of the fruit being de-stemmed but not crushed. A small amount of sulphur was added on the first day and the ambient yeast took about four days to begin the fermentation. This wine spent 15 months in French barrels, of which 25% were new, and was bottled in May 2020.

The 2019 Original Vineyard, planted in 1988, is a deep, fragrant, earthy, spicy wine; deeper than is usual for Original Vineyard. It has rich and sweet red and dark cherry, redcurrant and fresh herb aromas. It is already very complex and has the hallmark perfume and finesse of this site. The palate is initially fresh and supple, then the tannin builds with the fruit richness for a silky, balanced, fresh and very, very long finish. This is the wine, of all those that Michael Dhillon makes, which he most often drinks at home! Drink 2022-2032

Bindi Block 5 Pinot Noir Macedon Ranges, Victoria – 2019

This is Bindi’s top single vineyard Pinot Noir and is produced in tiny volumes.

A small proportion of whole bunches (5%) were included in the vats with the majority of the fruit being de-stemmed but not crushed. A small amount of sulphur was added on the first day and the ambient yeast took about four days to begin the fermentation. This wine spent 15 months in French barrels, of which 30% were new, and was bottled in late May 2020.

The 2019 Block 5 is typical of this vineyard, established in 1992, showing layers of earth, spice, red and dark berries with a flamboyance and depth that puts it up with the very best Block 5 wines produced since 1996. The palate is fresh and supple, intense, vibrant, chewy, rich, perfumed, complex and satisfying. The coiled up intensity and power all contained within the harmonious framework tells of a wine that will reward 15 plus years of cellaring but, satisfyingly, will drink beautifully at any stage of its life. Sadly, production was 30% down in 2019 and 50% down in 2020.

The juice for this wine goes to barrel straight from the press, with no additions of yeast, nutrients or enzymes. Once the juice is in barrel a small amount of sulphur is added and then they wait, usually about five days, for the fermentation to begin. The wine spent 11 months on yeast lees in French barrels, of which 30% are new, and was bottled in early March 2020.

Made from Chardonnay vines planted in 1988, Quartz Chardonnay is bright and fresh with blossom, lemon and wet stone/chalky aromas. There are delicate savoury, mealy lees elements. The palate is vigorous and lively, harmonious with a long, elegant, textured finish. It really is very finely poised and flowing. Drink 2024-2030
