Bindi Dixon Pinot Noir Macedon Ranges, Victoria – 2023

Bindi is widely acknowledged as being one of Australia’s best small producers. It is situated at around 500m altitude in the cool climate Macedon Ranges, about an hour’s drive north of Melbourne. The winery is truly “boutique”, even by Burgundian standards, with only 7 hectares of vines, of which 5 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir and 2 hectares with Chardonnay. Total production is never higher than 3,000 cases per vintage.

This Pinot Noir comes from vines planted in 1988 and 2001 and has impressive depth of red and black cherry and berry fruit flavours. It is still on the young side, but, given a little time to open up in the glass, starts to reveal additional layers of floral, spice and undergrowth/forest floor flavours. It is beautifully fresh and elegant with silky smooth tannins. Around 600 cases were produced. Drink 2024-2033.

Serve with spiced duck breast, Asian-style.

Bindi Kostas Rind Chardonnay Macedon Ranges, Victoria – 2023

Bindi is widely acknowledged as being one of Australia’s best small producers. It is situated at around 500m altitude in the cool climate Macedon Ranges, about an hour’s drive north of Melbourne. The winery is truly “boutique”, even by Burgundian standards, with only 7 hectares of vines, of which 5 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir and 2 hectares with Chardonnay. This fresh, intense, mineral Chardonnay comes from a small plot (1.5 hectares) of 35 year old vines planted on volcanic soils. It has gentle aromas and flavours of orange blossom, nectarine stone, spice and cashew nuts with vibrant, tight, very fine acidity and long length. Around 750 cases were produced. Just starting to drink now, this will open up and gain in complexity over the next 5 years and then drink beautifully until 2035.

Serve with pan-fried white fish fillets, calamari, or oysters.

The 2023 vintage has not yet been rated but the 2021 and 2022 vintages were awarded 95 and 96pts respectively by Huon Hooke of The Real Wine Review.

Bindi Kaye Pinot Noir Macedon Ranges, Victoria – 2022

Bindi is widely acknowledged as being one of Australia’s best small producers. It is situated at around 500m altitude in the cool climate Macedon Ranges, about an hour’s drive north of Melbourne. The winery is truly “boutique”, even by Burgundian standards, with only 7 hectares of vines, of which 5 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir and 2 hectares with Chardonnay. Total production is never higher than 3,000 cases per vintage.

“This is a very sentimental wine from our most elevated vineyard, planted in 2001, that pays tribute to my mother, Kaye. It’s a vineyard with a stunning perspective over the other vineyards, the winery, house and to the forests and hills beyond. There are some lovely metaphors, no doubt. The site has a lot of quartz and mudstone, a smattering of volcanic soils that have eroded down from the volcanic plateau above, and produces a wine of fragrance, structure and complexity.” Michael Dhillon, winemaker

Only 150 cases were produced

“Good depth of colour—medium ruby with purple tints. Bell-clear aromas of sweet ripe cherries, fruit driven and pure, with less obvious whole-bunch influence, although a spiciness grows as it airs in the glass with time. Terrific depth of flavour, intensity and subtle concentration, backed by fine grained but insistent tannins, all contributing to a penetrating and lasting persistence. A superb pinot noir which is still emerging and needs another year at least in the bottle.” 98pts The Real Review

Bindi Original Vineyard Pinot Noir Macedon Ranges, Victoria – 2022

Maximum order of 3 bottles per person.

This delicious special release Pinot Noir from Bindi is only available in tiny volumes. A small proportion of whole bunches (5%) were included in the vats with the majority of the fruit being de-stemmed but not crushed. A small amount of sulphur was added on the first day and the ambient yeast took about four days to begin the fermentation. This wine spent 15 months in French barrels, of which 25% were new.

The 2023 Original Vineyard, planted in 1988, is pure, vibrant and harmonious. It has rich and sweet red and dark cherry, redcurrant and fresh herb aromas. It is already very complex and has the hallmark perfume and finesse of this site. The palate is initially fresh and supple, then the tannin builds with the fruit richness for a silky, balanced, fresh and very long finish. This is the wine, of all those that Michael Dhillon makes, which he most often drinks at home! Drink 2025-2035

Bindi Quartz Chardonnay Macedon Ranges, Victoria – 2021

“The wine spent 10 months on yeast lees in French barrels, of which 25% were new, and was bottled in early March 2022. The 2021 is a classic Quartz Chardonnay. It is complex, poised and vibrant. There are layers of citrus aromas complemented by spice, cream, wet stones and meal. The palate is very fresh and bright with excellent intensity, balance and drive. These wines begin to drink at their best after five years in bottle and for a decade beyond that. Patience required!” Michael Dillon, winemaker

Bindi Pyrette Shiraz Heathcote, Victoria – 2021

Bindi is widely acknowledged as being one of Australia’s best small producers. It is situated at around 500m altitude in the cool climate Macedon Ranges, about an hour’s drive north of Melbourne. The winery is truly “boutique”, even by Burgundian standards, with only 7 hectares of vines, of which 5 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir and 2 hectares with Chardonnay. Total production is never higher than 3,000 cases per vintage.

This Shiraz was sourced from a vineyard Bindi has worked with since 2001 in the cool, high altitude (by Australia standards!) neighbouring Heathcote wine region. James Halliday describes it as a Pinot Noir maker’s Shiraz, which I fully agree with!

“Very deep, concentrated and saturated purple/red/black colour; marvellous depth of pepper/spice aroma, with background dark red fruits and dried herbs, a very northern Rhône-like iteration of shiraz. Very intense flavour, focused and long, with purity and refinement, seamless flow incorporating fine grained tannins. Texturally delicious. This is very stylish and is only at the beginnng of what will likely be a long and rewarding journey.” 95/100 Huon Hooke, The Real Review
