Mount Mary is recognised by Australia’s prestigious “Langton’s Classification” as one of the country’s five “Grands Crus”. “Quintet” is the flagship wine of the estate. From 50 year old vines, this expressive and ethereal red is recognised as one of Australia’s greatest Cabernet styles.
Their 2019 is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. The 2019 season could not have been more perfectly suited to ripening these five left-bank Bordeaux varieties.
The colour is strikingly deep and vibrant at this young age. On the nose this wine shows a ripe, dark fruit spectrum courtesy of the warmer growing season conditions. The aromatics include scents of blackcurrant, cassis, violets, cherry, cocoa and a pleasing level of Cabernet ‘leafiness’ adding to the wine’s aromatic complexity. The palate is defined by an incredible purity of fruit, a hallmark of the Quintet blend. The palate shows flavours of plums, raspberry, chocolate and hints of mint. The tannins are so fine and pure yet give this wine brilliant texture, energy and longevity.
“The 2019 Quintet was served to us at dinner in Yarraglen this week, and it looked impossibly fresh and red fruited on that night. In the lineup here today, the warm season has given the wine a density and gravitas, but it does it with a surge of buoyancy and density at the same time. The wine is black-fruited as opposed to red here, but with ruby inflections. It has a super pleasurable feel in the mouth. 13% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.” 97+pts Wine Advocate
