The “Mamoiada” is an ancient region of Sardinia based in the rugged, rocky centre of the island. Francesco is the 5th generation of his family to work this land, but the first to bottle his wines under his own “Cadinu” family name. His wines are all certified organic since 2020, but in reality artificial fertilisers have never been used on his vineyards, so they have been organic for over 100 years!
The soils in this region are of very old, decomposed granitic sand. These special soils, combined with the vineyards’ high altitudes between 620-750m and the high day-night temperature differences, produce wines with freshness, minerality and gentle, salty acidity. Yields are very low due to the dry climate and the family’s very old vines, helping the wines to express the granitic soils to the maximum.
“Ghirada Elisi” is a single north-facing vineyard of 80 year old Cannonau vines at an altitude of 650m. All vineyard work is carried out manually and ploughing is still done using an ox yoke.
On the nose this has attractive scents of wild cherries and mediterranean herbs, with additional flavours of ripe prunes on the palate. The wine is rich, powerful and complex with a fairly robust structure. It has a lovely bite of salty, granitic minerality on the finish which gives balance and freshness. 15% alcohol.
Serve with red meats, game and mature cheeses.
