The Tyrrell’s family purchased the Old Hillside Vineyard on Marrowbone Road in December 2017. This vineyard contains the ‘Old Patch’ planted in 1867. Old Hillside Shiraz is made from the younger vines on this site, with an average vine age of 50 years. A steep, eastern facing block that sits right underneath the Brokenback mountain range, which provides great protection. The block features darker, richer soils than the soils at our Ashmans property.
On February 22, the fruit was handpicked and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation took place in our open top vats. After fermentation, the wine was matured in two older French oak casks (2700L) for 14 months.
Winemaker tasting notes
Medium in colour density with a healthy purple edge. The nose is typical modern Hunter Valley Shiraz, wet earth, savoury characters coupled with red fruits. The palate builds slowly, upfront sweet delicate red fruits with a fine acid structure and tannins that are elegant and mouth coating. Very approachable, even at such a young age. Alc. 13.0%
