Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas La Geynale Cornas AC – 2022

The Cornas Appellation is situated about 100km south of Lyon and 10km south of the famous Hermitage wine district, with the Rhone River 2km to its east. It is the most southerly appellation in the Northern Rhone wine region, and also the warmest. It is famous for producing structured, robust and ripe-fruited red wines from the Syrah grape. Cornas is a small, sleepy village situated on a “massif granitique” – a series of rocky hills formed entirely of granite – sandwiched between limestone hills to both north and south. Located where northern France meets the south, at a latitude of 45N, its vegetation and climate are a mix of Mediterranean and northern European.

Vincent Paris started his winery in 1997. He works his vineyards organically, although is not certified organic.

“Geynale” is his most prestigious red wine vineyard, situated at 400m altitude and comprising Syrah vines over 100 years old; these are the oldest vines in the Cornas region. The vines’ roots are very deep, digging several metres down through the solid granite soil, which helps give this wine good freshness and acidity even in very warm vintages such as 2022.

This has a deep opaque purple colour. On the nose, it has a multitude of scents; black fruits, spices, violets and roses. On the palate, the richness of the black fruit is enhanced by a granitic minerality which gives the wine its magical balance. The wine is dense, rich, powerful and complex, yet remarkably fresh for such a warm and sunny vintage. The tannins are firm but silky and in perfect harmony. This is a delicious Syrah and one of the best examples from Cornas! 14% alcohol.

Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Rosato Barossa – 2022

Cirillo Estate’s Ancestor Vine Grenache Rosato from the Barossa Valley is no ordinary Rosé! These very special old vines were planted back in 1848, producing their first vintage in 1850, and they are now the world’s oldest Grenache vines still in production!  The vines have survived this long mainly because of the dry, sandy soils on which they grow; phylloxera could never survive in such dry conditions, which is why this remote part of South Australia still has so many wonderful old vines.

This amazing rosé is dry, full bodied, with spicy acidity and delicious floral flavours of red cherry and pomegranate.

“The 2022 Rosato is super pretty, with redcurrants, pomegranate, cherry and petals. I marvel at this wine because Marco Cirillo uses super old vine fruit—1848 plantings. Can you believe that, for rosé! Anyway, it does make good rosé. It was destemmed straight into the press, sat on skins all day and was pressed in the evening. It’s really pleasurable and pure. The 2.9 grams per liter of residual sugar does slick the wine a little, but when it comes to rosé, pleasure is paramount. And this is pleasurable. It has nice tannic structure through the finish. 12.7% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.” 92/100pts The Wine Advocate

92/100 Punkte Wine Advocate.

Villa Maria Reserve Sauvignon Blanc Wairau Valley, Marlborough – 2021

A classic representation of Sauvignon Blanc from the Wairau Valley in Marlborough, bursting with aromatic tropical fruit characters found in this warmer sub-region. This wine displays powerful aromas of blackcurrant, passionfruit and ripe rock-melon. The palate has an enticing array of ripe citrus fruits mixed with pungent herbs such as fresh rosemary, finishing with subtle acidity.

Summer 2021 was dry and mild with Marlborough’s signature high sunshine hours and cool nights delivering fruit in the best possible condition. The early autumn season provided Marlborough with very stable weather conditions therefore fruit was able to reach optimum physiological and flavour ripeness. The fruit was impeccably clean and the lower yields meant that the grapes packed a punch in flavour and concentration.

This unique, organic red was grown on the volcanic soils of the beautiful Lipari Islands north of Sicily. It has southern Italian red cherry fruit flavour combined with surprisingly “Burgundian” freshness and vitality; true volcanic minerality.

“A blend of 90% Corinto Nero and 10% Nero d’Avola, the Tenuta di Castellaro 2018 Nero Ossidiana is fermented in stainless steel but finishes its malolactic fermentation in large oak casks to impart extra textural softness and fiber. Some 8,000 bottles were produced in this vintage, and organically farmed vines are planted in sandy volcanic soils that are rich in minerals. This wine is fragrant and pure with dried lilac and rose petal. This vintage offers some sweet cherry fruit to the palate followed by crisp acidity. That freshness would cut through a classic lasagna al forno. This wine is named after the glass-like black lava rocks, obsidian, that absorb so much heat and sunshine throughout the growing season.” 93/100pts Wine Advocate

“It has been so exciting to witness the steady progress of Tenuta di Castellaro over recent years. Last year, I named this organically farmed winery on my list of top discoveries from Italy. The estate farms 20 hectares of alberello vines on the island of Lipari. The vines are perched at 350 meters in elevation on the northeast side of the island, with views of the sea and the islands of Alicudi, Filicudi and Salina in the distance. They also farm a small vineyard on the southeast side of the island on a panoramic terrace located on a steep sea bluff. This site is planted to Malvasia delle Lipari and Corinto Nero. You can see the island of Vulcano on the horizon, and organized tours of the vineyard offer an unforgettable sunset wine tasting.” Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
