Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel Sonoma – 2021

Profound, fresh, vibrant Zinfandel from vines averaging 80 years of age.  This has delicious raspberry fruit, full body and silky smooth tannins. From wonderful old vineyards in Sonoma where Zinfandel vines are grown alongside a mix of Carignane, Mourvedre, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Abouriou, Aubun, and assorted mixed white varieties.

“This is one of the strongest Old Vine Zinfandel bottlings we have made to date albeit a slightly different blend composition due to one of Mother Nature’s curveballs. The main contrast this year is that one of usual main elements of the blend—Esola Vineyard from Amador County—was picked early for rosé to avoid potential smoke issues from nearby wildfires. As a result, the blend leans more heavily into fruit from Sonoma and Contra Costa counties. Fruit from the great Teldeschi Ranch comprises just over 20% of the blend, followed by Beeson, Sodini, Nervo, Dommen, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho, Pato, Katushas’ and Bedrock—aka, a pretty sweet set of vineyards going into our most entry level bottling. The finished blend is 85% Zinfandel with 7% Carignan, 4% Cinsault and bits and bobs of Grand Noir, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet and other field-blended varieties. As usual, the average vine age is around 80 years old, which makes this truly an “old vine” cuvee. Our goal is always to make a wine that reflects what we love most about Zinfandel in California: to showcase its great fruit but also its spice, energy and freshness. Hailing from a drought year, this wine has an added degree of intensity to it that will make it great for early consumption or a little time sideways in the cellar.” Morgan Petersen MW, winemaker

Clos Bellane Cotes du Rhone Villages Valreas Rosé “diamant dans un verger” – 2023

Wow! This is a rosé like no other! Made from 100% old vine Grenache, it is a “gourmet” wine with serious weight, complexity and structure, which can be enjoyed as an apero or with quite rich poultry and fish dishes. Dry, with a delicious range of redcurrant, strawberry and raspberry fruit flavours, and even a hint of honeyed beeswax. Highly recommended if you like serious, top quality rosé wine.

This excellent biodynamic producer is situated between the villages of Valréas and Vinsobres in the far north of the Southern Rhone wine region. Their relatively high altitude vines (at around 400mts) grow on pure limestone soils and benefit from a steady, cooling breeze which blows down from the Alps nearby. These cool temperatures and limestone minerality, combined with copious quantities of Southern French sunshine, result in wines which have the freshness and elegance of the Northern Rhone together with the warmth, lavender and spice typical of the south.

Bedrock Pato Vineyard Heritage Red Contra Costa County, Sonoma – 2021

“From the southern edge of Oakley planted on sand, Pato Heritage wine is a lovely reflection of the vintage in this increasingly suburbanized area. Due to the drought, we opted to give the vines a bit of a break and picked most of the Mataro for rosé, so this wine leans a bit more heavily into Zinfandel and Petite Sirah than normal. There has always been a beautiful relationship between the finesse provided by sand and the brawny and tannic nature of a variety like Petite Sirah. Here, the sandy soils buff away the variety’s rougher edges and makes for a deeply colored but elegant element of the wine filled with dark fruit and black pepper. This is combined with the vibrant fruit from Zinfandel to make a wine that is rich but svelte. Raised almost entirely in puncheon with a small amount of new oak, this wine will be delicious in the near term but will also age nicely for up to a decade. ” Morgan Petersen MW, winemaker

Mey Selections Traditional Scottish Gin The Castle of Mey, Caithness

“Mey Selections” is a brand inspired by Prince Charles which supports local food and drink producers within a 150 mile radius of the beautiful Castle of Mey, the ancestral home of his grandmother HRH the Queen Mother, and based on Scotland’s northernmost shores.
Their newly-launched gin is produced by Martin Murray of Rock Rose gin fame, using a similar mix of botanicals to Rock Rose gin but with the addition of special herbs grown in and around Mey Castle. Applemint gives a slightly sweeter flavor than other mints and grows in the local forests. Sweet cicely, gathered from the hedgerows, has a gentle aniseed flavor, whilst the bog myrtle from the walls of the castle itself lend a herbal, menthol flavor.
Best served on ice with a slice of orange or grapefruit peel.

Clos Du Gravillas L’Inattendu Minervois Blanc AC – 2023

Certified organic. A blend of 50% Grenache Gris, 30% Grenache Blanc and 20% Macabeu from 50-90 year old vines grown on rocky limestone soils.

“Clotted cream and vanilla, grilled mango and richness and then wave after wave of exquisitely precise, glittering, crystalline mica-mineral dust and sweet-orange acidity. This is exceptional. The combination of expansive richness, high-voltage but super-ripe acidity, smoky minerality and mosaic of flavours fills every corner of the mouth with thrilling vibration.” 17.5/20pts Jancis Robinson and her wine of the week in October 2024. 13.5% alcohol.

This rich, mineral, dry white wine would be perfect served with typical Mediterranean cuisine, garlic and parsley, peppers, poultry and sheep or goat’s cheese.

217 cases were produced. Drink now – 2027

Clos du Gravillas is a wonderful, tiny family domaine of only 8.5 hectares founded in 1999 by American John Bojanowski and his wife Nicole, a local lady who was born and bred in the Minervois region. Their vineyards are situated about 40 minutes drive north of Narbonne outside the sleepy village of St Jean de Minervois, on the Cazelles-Minervois plateau (which is destined to become the next Languedoc Cru later this year). It is hot and dry down on the Languedoc plains, but up here at 300m altitude the combination of their amazingly stony terroirs – a mix of limestone and white gravel – and the cooling Mistral winds keep the temperature a few degrees cooler. The limestone also retains water very efficiently, which is vital in this dry region which receives only around 600mm rainfall p/a.

The domaine is worked 100% organically (Ecocert) with respect for the terroir, without herbicides and with the utmost care for the preservation of soil life. Key to their fantastic wine quality is the rigorous selection they make when they manually pick only the ripest and most perfect grapes.

They specialise in growing local Languedoc grapes on very old vines. Their Grenache Gris vines were planted in the 1940s. The pink-coloured Grenache Gris grapes form the basis of their L’Inattendu white – so called because they expected the wine to be a rosé when they first made it! John is now a huge fan of Grenache Gris, which he believes has far more character and personality than Grenache Blanc. The Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc and Macabeu grapes which form L’Inattendu Blanc are fermented in large Austrian oak barrels and then matured for nine months on their lees to give extra depth of flavour.
