Indice 1/EU Dry wine.
The Rangen Grand Cru is in southern Alsace, in the villages of Thann and Vieux-Thann, at the start of the Alsace wine route. As you travel south, it’s easy to forget that you’re climbing in altitude, and it’s precisely this higher altitude that explains the late ripening climate of this volcanic terroir. Looking at its steep, south-facing slopes, one might think that Rangen is an early-ripening terroir, but it’s generally the second-to-last vineyard to be harvested on the estate, just before Windsbuhl. As it weathers, the volcanic rock, composed of sedimented ash, produces true clays with a very high capacity for mineral absorption. This is the main reason for the distinctive character of Rangen wines. Tiny yields, especially in 2024, also explain the intensity of the 2024 vintage wines from this cru.
Olivier Humbrecht MW tasting note
Bright pale-yellow colour. The initial nose is striking. The taster will be deeply focused and will likely be overwhelmed by the sheer intensity of the volcanic aromas on the nose. The palate exudes such power that it commands respect. Everything is there: power, length, intensity, harmony, saline acidity… These descriptors, however, fail to capture the emotion this wine evokes. Rangen is a challenging terroir that demands heroic viticulture. This wine is the culmination of that effort; please appreciate it with respect.
Press comments
“Wet, walnut skin notions on the nose point to reduction. Underneath is crushed citrus foliage with an alluring aroma. The palate is purity, serenity, finesse and flow. The zestiness makes the mouth water while the purity and stoniness are disarming…a super-fine, super-elegant expression of Rangen that is utterly firm but filigree. Wonderful! This needs time.” 97/100 Vinous
