Olivier Humbrecht MW’s notes
Bottling date: 1/2026; Alcohol: 13.6° alc; Residual sweetness: 6 g/l; Total acidity 3.8 g/l H2SO4 (5.8 g/l Tartaric acid), pH: 3.4; Yields: 12 hl/ha; Optimum drinking period: 2028-2054+; Average age of the vines: 61 years; Terroir: Sedimentary volcanic rocks. South facing, steep slope. Indice 1/EU Dry wine.
The Rangen Grand Cru is an imposing terroir. Facing south, on a steep slope (90% on average with peaks at 130%), its volcanic rock, composed of compacted tuff and ash from the Palaeozoic era (350 M years old), shapes wines with a strong personality. In 2024, this character is reinforced by a particularly small yield due to a difficult flowering and a challenging summer with significant day/night temperature fluctuations, which encouraged powdery mildew. A disease of great vintages! In 1990, another vintage where powdery mildew was particularly severe on the Rangen, sprayings were tripled on this vineyard! But what a result! The strong Rangen signature can be found on the 2024 vintage, which has produced an exceptional wine.
Olivier Humbrecht MW tasting note
Intense yellow colour. The nose reveals a powerful volcanic presence with incredible persistence. No, this isn’t reduction, but rather the complex aromatic typical of the great wines this vineyard is capable of: smoky, flinty, with hints of sulphurous water and peat… The palate is ample, velvety, intense, and finishes with a refined structure where the acidity recalls the cooler character of the vintage. Production is minuscule in 2024, but what a great wine!
Press comment
From tiny yields of 12hl/ha, it comes with the merest hint of reduction. The palate, however, expands into complete juiciness that features tart red apple, lemon, grapefruit and pale peach, all framed with a gorgeous, benign bitterness that makes the mouth water. This is beautifully pearl-like in its surface and shape, smooth, supple, luminous and unimpeded. Simply gorgeous. Bone dry.” 97/100 Vinous
