Vineyard
The 8 Acres Vineyard was planted in 1892 on deep red clay soils over limestone. Situated just below our 4 Acres Vineyard, the vine orientation is north/south, opposite to 4 Acres, which runs east/west and produces a different style of wine altogether.
Vintage Conditions
The 2022 vintage, in many ways, was a mirror of 2021. With above average rainfall in the winter months, the vines were set up perfectly for the growing season. Cooler temperatures over the summer period meant that there was no rush to begin harvest and we began about seven to ten days later than normal. All the fruit was in remarkable condition with intense fruit flavours coupled with high natural acidity.
Winemaker’s Notes
On February 21, the fruit was handpicked and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation took place in our open top vats. After fermentation, the wine was matured in a single three-year-old French oak cask for 14 months.
“The 2023 8 Acres Shiraz is ultra vibrant, yet the tannins are a little closer to the surface here than they are in the 4 Acres of the same vintage. This is weightier than the 4 Acres, despite being the same vine material, planted next door, but planted to the opposite orientation: this is north-south as opposed to the east-west orientation of 4 Acres. It sits comfortably in the mouth, with notes of sandalwood and cedar, paprika and raspberry seed, red licorice and pink peppercorns. What an astoundingly good wine, it is light and fine but tannic and firm. The tannins are a ductile web of structure in the mouth. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.” 97+/100 Wine Advocate
“Planted in 1892, this “sacred site” produces a mesmerising, contemplative wine that will reward the patient….”97pts James Halliday
