The Dao is a small, classic wine region situated in the granitic mountains of north-central Portugal, to the south of the Douro Valley, but considerably cooler in climate due to its higher altitude.
Textura Wines is a family project started in 2018 in the Dao on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela mountain range. Here the soils are of pure granite, with granitic sand on top, giving the wines noticeable freshness and acidity.
Owners Marcelo and his wife Patricia are originally from Brazil, but were attracted by the enormous potential of this wine region to produce wines with a unique character which express the minerality of their granite soils. They now own 28 hectares of vineyards and have grown their grapes organically since 2020.
“Pura” is the winery’s flagship white wine, made from a traditional Dao field blend of old vine Encruzado, Bical, Fernao Pires and Dona Branca grapes. The different varieties are co-fermented using wild yeasts in large 500l oak casks, then the wine is left on its lees in cask for a further 11 months before bottling.
From the long, cool 2021 vintage, it is dry with racy acidity, a creamy texture, wonderful depth and complexity and a pure sense of granitic minerality. Flavours of brioche, gentle oak and some white pepper. Delicious, with good ageing potential. 12.5% alcohol.
