Fifty One Degrees North was introduced in 2023 as Gusbourne’s first “prestige cuvée”. It is a blend of 64% Chardonnay and 36% Pinot Noir which spent at least 7 years on its lees during its second fermentation in bottle.
2014 was the first truly great vintage in England according to Gusbourne’s former winemaker Charlie Holland, and so the decison was taken to pick the winery’s best plots of vines separately and vinify them for far longer than the norm. This wine is the outstanding result of this long term project and significant investment.
Fifty One degrees North has quickly become England’s highest awarded sparkling wine. Although it is not cheap, it is every bit as good as most “prestige” Champagnes at higher prices than this, and is likely only to increase in price in the future as it becomes more famous. We highly recommend this extremely rare first release! Just under 300 cases were produced.
Gusbourne was awarded 98/100pts by The Wine Enthusiast and voted “winery of the year 2023” in Great Britain in the Wine GB awards and by Australia’s respected Real Review, with the following comment:-
“Gusbourne’s seat at the top table of English wineries is confirmed thanks to a series of consistently excellent sparkling wines headed by its remarkable prestige cuvée, Fifty One Degrees North.”
