This small but very fine Brunello producer is ideally situated, with vines just below those of Biondi Santi in the southeast of Montalcino, as well as a small vineyard (Le Chiuse)of Sangiovese vines planted in 1947 to the north of the town. Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, the wine was matured in different sized Slavonian oak casks for ten months before bottling. 2022 was a very warm and sunny vintage, but rains in late July/early August and cooler night time temperatures in August have given the wine good acidity and development potential.
It has a deep ruby colour with concentrated aromas of berries, cherries and blood orange. A very juicy palate with refreshing acidity, good balance and fine tannic structure. You can enjoy this already in its fruit-filled youth, but it should develop nicely in bottle for the next 10 years.
“The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino also shows its own distinctive point of richness, adding to a more complex interpretation of this entry-level wine. Dried fruit, cinnamon stick and crushed stone are the markers. I highly recommend this bottle for its balanced fruit flavors and mid-weight texture. I would venture to say that this wine is closer to Brunello status than it is to Rosso di Montalcino.” 92/100pts The Wine Advocate
