“From a historic clos with 17-year-old vines (entirely French clones) on sandy calcareous soils and fermented with 30% to 35% whole clusters, the 2018 Malanser Pinot Noir Schöpfi opens with a deep, intense and concentrated yet pure and flinty bouquet and displays perfectly ripe cherries and dark berries with exotic and ethereal spices. Round and generous yet refined and crystalline on the elegant, silky-textured and refreshing palate, this is a full-bodied, intense, sustainable and powerful Pinot with a clear, clean and intense finish. Compared to the Spielmann, the Schöpfi is more powerful and ripe yet not as finessed. I am already curious to taste the wine again after it has been bottled.
