Eisacktal Aristos Kerner Alto Adige DOC – 2024

This dry white wine was grown on quartz-rich soils at 750-1000m altitude in the Dolomite mountains. The Kerner grape is a crossing between Riesling and Schiava, and the wonderful, rapier-like acidity of the Riesling grape is clear to taste in this example.

It has intense flavours of lemon, lime and grapefruit with a vibrant core of Riesling-like acidity. Fresh, elegant, fine and complex, this is a perfect expression of the crystal pure, fresh Dolomite mountain air and will develop beautifully in bottle for at least 10 years.

Drink with light appetisers, cold meats, egg or mushroom dishes, poached freshwater fish and shellfish, or on its own as an apero.

In the Valle Isarco, the narrow valley that climbs north-east towards the Austrian border, Cantina Valle Isarco won the first Platinum ever awarded to a varietal Kerner, for its Aristos Kerner 2024. Kerner is a grape few drinkers outside these valleys will have tasted, yet here it has become something of an emblem.

‘Our Aristos Kerner comes from steep hillside vineyards at elevations between 850 and 950 metres above sea level,’ says managing director Armin Gratl.
