Katie Jones is a quirky, humorous and very skilled English winemaker who has been making great wine in the Southwest corner of France for over 25 years. She specialises in rescuing neglected plots of extremely old vines and through a combination of passion, hard work and real winemaking talent is able to produce amazing wines from them.
This wine comes exclusively from a small parcel of vines with a breathtaking view, near the village of Tuchan, locally known as La Grande Pièce. The vines are over 50 years old and are among the last Grenache Gris vines remaining in the village. The vineyard was planted in the heyday of the famous Vin Doux Naturel wines of the region under the Rivesaltes appellation. Very popular in the 1960s, local farmers planted a lot of Grenache to benefit from the high prices offered for Rivesaltes.
The wine has a pale gold colour. The nose is expressive and fragrant with notes of wildflowers such as mimosa and almond blossom. A touch of delicate spice is present. The oak is subtle and well-integrated.
On the palate, the wine has good depth and a smooth, silky texture. It is fresh and lively with hints of citrus, melon, ripe pineapple and pear, offering a long finish of wild herbs.
Enjoy it as an aperitif with roasted almonds and olives or savour it with grilled seafood, stuffed peppers, or mature soft cheeses.
Only 100 cases were produced.
