Domaine du Closel Savennieres Les Caillardières – 2021

Domaine du Closel is situated in the sleepy little village of Savennières, one of the most famous villages for producing Chenin Blanc in the world!  They have a beautiful chateau with several acres of parkland and many centuries-old trees, making it a wonderful place to visit, not only for wine lovers. All their wines are certified organic and biodynamic.

This bone dry white wine comes from a single vineyard of 35 year old Chenin Blanc vines planted on schist and sandstone soils. The Caillardières vineyard is harvested quite late, when the berries are very golden, giving a wine with aromas of cooked apples, exotic fruit, sultanas and toasted almonds. The terroir gives it a very silky texture, characteristic of these schisto-sandstone parcels. This cuvée was vinified and matured for 18 months in old 400 litre oak casks, which helps give extra length and complexity.

The cool 2021 vintage has given a nice bite of acidity – this wine shows real “Savennières” minerality on its long finish. 

Enjoy with roast scallops with a parsnip velouté, or walnut-crusted guinea fowl supreme with stuffed cabbage.
