Domaine du Closel is situated in the sleepy little village of Savennières, one of the most famous villages for producing Chenin Blanc in the world! They have a beautiful chateau with several acres of parkland and many centuries-old trees, making it a wonderful place to visit, not only for wine lovers.
This 18 year old dry white wine comes from the domaine’s best vineyard, “Clos du Papillon”, which is a magical plot of vines averaging 50 years old grown on a mix of clay, sand, schist and volcanic rock.
2005 was a very fine vintage across the Loire, producing low yields (30hl/ha for this vineyard) of exceptional quality fruit. The grapes were organically cultivated, hand-picked then naturally fermented using native yeasts from the vineyard. After a long (three month) fermentation, the wine then spent a further year maturing on its lees in large old French oak casks. It has been aged in bottle in the winery’s cool underground cellars until now.
This 100% Chenin Blanc has a wide array of honey, beeswax and nutty flavours and is balanced by perfectly fresh acidity. It has good structure, intensity and a long nutty length and is an excellent example of aged Chenin Blanc. This would be perfect served alongside fine fish dishes, lobster or scallops.
1375 cases were produced.
