Quinta Da Chocapalha is situated in the sunny,vineyard-covered hills of Alenquer, 45kms northeast of Lisbon. It is owned by the half-Swiss Tavares Da Silva family, and the wines are made by highly respected Sandra Tavares Da Silva (who also makes Pintas and Foz Torto in the Douro Valley).
The 100% family-owned 45 hectares of vines are constantly refreshed by cooling winds from the Atlantic Ocean 30kms to the west, which helps to give all the wines their underlying freshness and acidity. Cool, often foggy mornings and evenings make the growing climate here considerably cooler than the Douro Valley further north.
This wine is made from the quinta’s best quality plot of 30 year old Touriga Nacional vines – the most famous grape of the Douro – giving it gorgeous wild, violet aromas and rich, dark berry fruit character. The tannins are velvet-smooth due to gentle pressing, Douro-style, in lagares for 12 days. 24 months maturation in French oak barriques has given it full body and real complexity. This wine is packed in very smart 3 bottle wooden cases.
