Haut Bailly II is the excellent second wine of Chateau Haut Bailly in the Pessac Léognan commune south of Bordeaux. In very good vintages such as 2019 it offers almost the quality of the grand vin at a fraction of its price. You really can not go wrong with this wine at this price!

Chateau Haut Bailly have THE most amazing, state of the art new winery which has been built into the hill outside the old chateau so that you barely know there is a winery there. They have possibly the oldest vines in Bordeaux – 20% of the blend for their grand vin each year comes from a plot of vines directly outside the chateau which are over 100 years old. And the chateau is managed by one of the most impressive personalities in Bordeaux – Veronique Sanders – who has achieved so much during her tenure over the past 30 or so years.

If you like your Bordeaux with elegance, finesse and soul, then Haut Bailly will never disappoint!

2019 was a warm and sunny vintage of excellent quality. The chateau’s second wine is already quite developed, with dark fruit flavours and elegant, ripe and smooth tannins. Very fine and a great value second wine, this just lacks the extra weight and power of the “grand vin”. 93/100 Paul Liversedge MW, tasted at the chateau in September 2025.

“The 2019 Haut-Bailly II exhibits aromas of rich berry fruit, cassis, cigar wrapper and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and polished, with a ripe core of fruit and plenty of rich, powdery tannin, it’s a Merlot-dominated blend that was composed at the moment of assemblage (as opposed to a selection of dedicated plots).” 90pts The Wine Advocate

“Haut-Bailly now boasts one of Bordeaux’s grander new wineries, but the 2019 vintage at this address reminds us that the old facilities were more than capable of delivering excellence too! Winemaking here is rather gentle, with comparatively cool fermentation temperatures and a modest 50% new oak, yet the 2019s are rather structured, serious wines that will demand a bit of patience, reflecting a more classically proportioned, elegant style than the more flamboyant 2018. As usual, Cabernet Sauvignon represents slightly over half of the blend, including a block of ancient, more than 100-year-old vines in front of the château itself.”
