Desvignes Morgon Cote Du Py – 2018

“Aromas of spicy cassis and blackberries mingle with scents of smoked meats and cracked black pepper to introduce the 2018 Morgon Côte du Py, a medium to full-bodied, layered and broad-shouldered wine with a fleshy core of juicy fruit, excellent depth and dimensions, and a long, nicely defined finish. There’s plenty of fine-grained tannin here, but it’s hidden to such an extent that this will make for more accessible early drinking than the firmer 2017 rendition.

This 13-hectare domaine produces some of the longest-lived and most serious wines in the Beaujolais. Old vines, cultivated soils, a late harvest and classical winemaking with semi-carbonic maceration, long macerations and a submerged cap are the rudiments of the approach. These are inky, saturated reds with plenty of character and structure, and the top cuvées will have no trouble evolving for two decades.
