The Chiappini family are truly one of the Bolgheri region’s best kept secrets! They are a small, family wine business, 100% organic, producing top quality red and white wines at a fraction of the price of some of their more illustrious neighbours. The location of their vineyards is impeccable: directly next to Ornellaia and opposite Le Macchiole!
Produced from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Sangiovese, this smooth, full bodied red was aged in used oak barrels for 1 year to give spicy complexity but no obvious “oaky” flavours. Ripe and richly fruited, with velvet smooth tannins, effortless balance and freshness, this is a wine you want to drink several glasses of! 25,000bottles were produced. Drink 2020-2025.
Serve with red meat dishes, particularly steak or wild pigeon, or caciucco (Tuscan seafood stew)
“A nice choice for grilled porcini, the Giovanni Chiappini 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Felciaino is a blend of certified organic Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) with Merlot (40%) and a smaller part Sangiovese. This is a balanced expression that delivers nicely ripened fruit, not too heavy and not too light. This is the estate’s entry-level red blend, but the care and balance of the winemaking is evident. Blackberry and maraschino cherry yield to smoked cedar and tilled earth. There is a touch of rosemary sprig on the close.
