Sugrue Rock Story Sparkling Wine, Sussex, England – NV

A multi-vintage blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier and 35% Chardonnay. Base wine comes from the 2022 vintage with 40% reserve wine averaging 10 years old. 18months on lees. 6g/l dosage.
This fine, dry sparkling wine is an expression of the different rock types which underlie Sugrue’s vineyards – chalk, limestone, sandstone and clay. It has a brooding, autolytic nose showing orchard fruit and layers of richness and complexity from the reserve wines in the blend. Focused and fresh with a long finish. An excellent introduction to the Sugrue winemaking style at a very fair price.

The palate is alive with bubbles whose frothiness almost makes you forget how beautifully complex the wine underneath is. The reserve wines add such nuance and depth, making this a winner. The more you savor the mid-palate, the more you discover. At the core is pristine freshness and the kind of patina only time will lend, that deep, primal, essential saltiness that seems like an essence. This has an addictive quality about it.
