I first tasted a Merlot from the Dutruiy Brothers at a large blind tasting of Merlot wines carried out in November 2023 for one of Switzerland’s major newspapers. I was immediately blown away! This blend of predominantly (85%)Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc from the warm and sunny 2022 vintage is full of juicy cassis, plum and damsen fruit, with gentle vanilla notes from its maturation in French oak barrels. It is at the same time elegant, with surprising freshness and fine tannic structure for a wine at this price level. This Merlot blend truly over-delivers at its very fair price point.
The Frères Dutruy vines are spread out along “Terre Sainte”, a region on the western edge of canton Vaud which borders canton Geneva. It stretches from the banks of Lake Geneva north to the Jura mountains. The vines are planted on gravel and limestone soils.
The winery was founded in 1914 by Julien and Christian Dutruy’s great grandfather.
