Many of the wines in our range are produced organically or biodynamically. These wines are marked with a moon symbol to reflect biodynamicists belief in the influence of the moon over plant life.
Organic and biodynamic wines are produced without the use of chemicals or additives (except minimal amounts of vital copper in the vineyard and sulphur dioxide in the winery). Both types of certification take the wineries many years to achieve, and are extremely strict in their requirements. Growing grapes and making wine according to these principles requires complete dedication and a lot more effort and time in the vineyards than wines made using chemicals, herbicides or pesticides. So what are the benefits?
Soil; minimal use of chemicals in the vineyard results in soil which is healthy and “alive”, and which will last for years longer than a soil treated regularly with chemicals.
Grapes and wines which best reflect their “terroir”. More and more people are looking for “minerality” and a sense of “terroir” in their wines today. We firmly believe that you can best produce wines which taste of the soil they were grown on by looking after your soils as naturally as possible.
Wines of individuality and complexity. Organic and biodynamic grapes are fermented using only natural yeasts which grow in the producer’s own vineyard and winery. This helps preserve the individual taste of the vineyard or terroir in the wines. Natural yeasts usually give a wine added complexity and variety of flavour compared with using “off-the-shelf” cultivated yeasts in fermentation.
