“Light straw-yellow hue with an attractive bouquet of straw/dried flowers and there is some toast/caramel development showing: it’s not just a simple young fruit wine. It’s intense, fresh and bright on the palate, crisp and dry, with an appetising finish and lively acidity. Remarkable value: a good intro to the Arras style at an affordable price.” 91 pts The Real Review December 2023

House of Arras Grand Vintage Tasmania – 2015

A superb, dry, richly toasty and nutty blend of 67% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Noir, which was aged for at least 7 years on its lees during second fermentation in bottle.

Light-to-mid yellow colour, bright and clear; the bouquet is nutty and lightly toasted bread, nougat and hazelnut while the palate is rich and full yet also very elegant. Ample, flavoursome and falls on the generous side of the ledger as opposed to delicacy. Barrel work is apparent. There’s a meaty suggestion of reduction on the mid and end-palates. The finish is soft and rich and it ends pleasingly dry, but not the slightest bit austere. Long aftertaste. In the final analysis, a very satisfying glass of bubbles. ” 96pts Huon Hooke, The Real Review

The palate is fine and intense, piercing and refreshingly crisp, with a dry finish and great appetising properties. Tasmania (Derwent Valley, East Coast, Tamar Valley and Coal River Valley)

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The majority of this wine was crafted from the 2016 vintage; a year of generous fruit set despite the exceeding dry conditions that persisted from spring through to the commencement of harvest. During harvest there were some significant rain events that increased the soil moisture. This reinvigorated the vine canopies allowing them to ripen the fruit to optimum balance and finesse.

WINEMAKING

All three varieties are hand harvested and upon reaching the winery, the fruit is bunch pressed with only the premium juice fractions selected for primary fermentation. A small portion of the wine is fermented in first and second use French oak (93% stainless steel and 7% oak), with 100% of the wine undergoing Malolactic Fermentation. The wine develops complexity and finesse with four years on its lees in bottle during its second fermentation in bottle.

Winemaker Ed Carr’s notes

Born of a long-held desire to craft world class sparkling wines, the House of Arras is a true expression of its origin and maker – a marriage of exceptional cold climate Tasmanian vineyards and uncompromising sparkling winemaking techniques mastered over decades. The House of Arras Rosé is a sophisticated sparkling rosé style with a wonderful balance of red fruits and complexity from age.

GRAPE VARIETIES
Pinot Noir 75% Chardonnay 25%

COLOUR
Sparkling gold blushed with a youthful crimson hue, enlivened by a refined and persistent bead.

NOSE
Lifted fruit aromas of maraschino cherry and fresh raspberry combine with scents of sour dough yeast and a hint of vanilla bean.

PALATE
Seamless, luscious and intensely focussed wine, showing characters of Turkish Delight, desiccated blood orange and a nuance of red berry yoghurt. The low dosage is perfectly balanced with the fruit, natural acidity and fine tannin. The line is precise, the fruit vibrant and finishes with a superbly persistent complexity.

VINEYARD REGION
Tasmania (Coal River Valley, Derwent Valley, Pipers River & East Coast).

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
Winter and spring were cold, wet and challenging, conditions that continued into flowering, significantly reducing the yield and resulting in a high incidence of ‘hen and chicken’ berries on the bunches. Due to the uneven ripening of the bunches, hang time was increased to avoid unripe characters in the larger berries. This approach was very successful and resulted in full and consistently ripe flavours in the wines. The low yield resulted in wines of high intensity and viscosity.

WINEMAKING
Primary fermentation was in stainless steel (89%) and (11%) fermented in first use French Oak barriques. A minimum seven years maturation in tirage, followed by tailored dosage, results in mature and savoury style enlivened by an early rush of fresh red berry fruits from the high portion of Pinot Noir, whilst the addition of Chardonnay offers elegance and flavour diversity.

TIRAGE
The wine spent seven years on its lees in bottle during second fermentation.

“The Krug of Australia” 97pts James Halliday

Bright, light to medium yellow colour. The bouquet is exquisitely multi-layered and arresting, creamy toasty, roasted hazelnut and smoked-charcuterie aromas, honey and lemon chardonnay nuances discernible within the overall complexity. Buttery popcorn as it warmed up. This all transfers superbly to the palate, where the wine is mouth-filling, rich and ample, soft but dry textured and the aftertaste is tremendously long. It can still be tasted minutes later. A great sparkling wine and a magical drink.” 97 pts The Real Review March 2022

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Dry conditions persisted through late 2008 and into 2009 and many vineyards were prone to severe frost. Cold and windy conditions significantly reduced fruit set and overall the 2009 vintage experienced low fruit yields. In January there was a short burst of heat and then a return to very cool conditions further exacerbating the difficulties with achieving fruit maturation this vintage. Wine from this vintage express the fullness of a lower yielding year but has retained a strong acid line that ensures longevity and brightness.

WINEMAKING
Crafted in the traditional sparkling winemaking method, combined with fastidious and modern viticultural techniques. The fruit is hand-picked and gently pressed with only the highest quality juice selected for fermentation. Further complexity and character are built into the wine with 10% fermentation in first use French Oak barriques followed by 100% malolactic fermentation. The blended wine has been matured for twelve years in tirage ensuring a depth and complexity consistent with the worlds’ finest cuvées.
