Silas Hörler’s Kalkofen vineyard lies in Maienfeld, just on the border with Fläsch.
The terroir here is gravelly. The vines are low-growing, producing low yields and small berries.
The grapes are harvested when fully ripe in autumn and are placed in an open wooden vat. The stalks are not removed, nor are the berries crushed. Fermentation therefore takes place within the whole berries. Approximately two-thirds of the way through alcoholic fermentation, the grapes are gently crushed by foot, then fermented and filled into French barriques. The wine is bottled one year later.
The wine has a dark colour with light violet reflections. The nose is captivating with aromas of spice and black pepper, cinnamon and a hint of eucalyptus.
On the palate, the wine is firm with smooth, pleasant tannins and a long finish. 900 bottles were produced.
Im Glas zeigt sich eine dunkle Farbe mit leicht violetten Reflexen. Die Nase bestich mit viel Würze nach schwarzem Pfeffer, Zimt und ein Hauch Eukalyptus.
Im Gaumen präsentiert sich der Wein Straff mit weichem Auftakt, angenehmen Tanninen und langem Abgang.
