Vina Tondonia White Rioja Reserva Bodega Lopez Heredia – 2010 – ON REQUEST!

This wine has been referred to as “the last bastion of classic Spanish whites” and comes from the producer’s top vineyard – Tondonia. It is a blend of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia from vines which yield less than 25% of the average in Rioja! With its deep golden colour, bone dry fruit and intense acidity, and wonderful richness from its lengthy maturation in old oak casks, this is truly superb white Rioja from one of the all time great vintages – 2010!

“2010 was one of the finest vintages in recent times, and the 2010 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva is the textbook fine and elegant white where the 90% Viura is complemented by the 10% Malvasía and, according to María José López de Heredia, gives a mellower profile (honey and some more creaminess) and compensates for the bitter almond notes of Viura and the austerity, making the wine a little rounder. This is a phenomenal vintage of the white Tondonia, vibrant, balanced and fresh. 16,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018.

I tasted up to three vintages of the same wine as it has been some time since I tasted them, and I also sampled the forthcoming vintages to be released in early 2023. The next vintage of Gran Reserva will be 2004, when they produced all three wines (the rosé was not produced, of course, it was a year in the hiatus between 2000 and 2008). 2005, 2007, 2010, 2011 and perhaps 2013 (for a sentimental reason, when their father died) will also be Gran Reserva vintages. What I tasted made sense with the character of each vintage—brilliant 2010s; a warm and more evolved 2011; a very good 2012; an atypical and challenging 2013; a cool and balanced 2014; and a warmer and riper 2015. As a bonus track, I tasted (and swallowed) the 2004 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, and I can tell you I cannot wait for the wine to be released in 2024…” 96/100pts The Wine Advocate
