The tiny DOC of Carema sits on Alpine slopes in the valley leading up from Turin to Aosta in Piemonte, northwest Italy.
Muraje is one of the top producers in the region, and one of the most exciting in all Piemonte! Their old Nebbiolo vines (average age 50 years old) are planted on traditional pergolas on steep, terraced mountain slopes facing south and west.
2022 was a very warm vintage which was mitigated and saved by the Caremese pergola training method, which protected the grape bunches from being scalded by the sun.
This very special Nebbiolo has beautiful, fleshy fruit in the foreground, whilst its body is full and enveloping, with good acidity which is the hallmark of Carema Nebbiolo. Despite the heat of the 2022 vintage, it retains elegance and wonderful freshness due to its high altitude and the shade given to the grapes by the pergola method of training the vines. A very special Nebbiolo made with painstaking care by a hugely dedicated husband and wife team – Federico and Deborah.
Highly recommended, this is a unique combination of Alpine freshness and one of the warmest vintages Italy has ever had. 13.5% alcohol.
Less than 250 cases were produced.
“The 2022 Carema Sumié is fabulous. This brisk, taut Carema is so classy. Dried herbs, cedar and tobacco lend tons of nuance. This has real understated depth and structure, qualities that are such signatures of this tiny appellation. The long, mineral-drenched finish is sublime. There is no Riserva in 2022; all the fruit went into this straight Carema.” 94/100 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
